The sun was just peeking over the rolling hills when Patton the rooster marched out of his chicken coop to start his morning patrol. Before leaving, he took a quick glance into the coop to make sure that none of the chickens were awake yet. As he assumed, all of his friends were fast asleep, comfortably snuggled together in their warm home. With a ruffle of his feathers, he walked off to begin his patrol.
It was almost time to go back home and wake up the chickens when Patton heard a mysterious shuffling in the tall shrubs. Bravely, he puffed out his chest and marched towards the noise to investigate. Suddenly, something jumped out of the bushes and Patton valiantly jumped on top of it pecking with all his might.
“Patton! Stop! It’s just me!” yelled the animal beneath the angry rooster. Recognizing the voice he had just heard, he jumped off.
“Why are you out of the coop so early Kukkud!? You know it’s not safe for you to come out till I’m done with the morning patrol!” said Patton, his voice laced with annoyance towards the young rooster.
“I’m old enough Patton! Please let me come with you?” Just as Patton was about to answer the small rooster, he heard another shuffle by the shrubs.
“Kukkud! Did you bring another chicken with you!” He yelled angrily.
“No Patton! I promise! I made sure no one saw me leave!” Realizing that the noise could be a true threat, Patton instinctively stepped in front of Kukkud.
Suddenly, a young coyote jumped out and pinned him onto the floor.
“Run Kukkud!” yelled the struggling rooster. Horrified, the young rooster took off toward the coop as fast as he could.
When Kukkud finally got back to the chicken coop, he was out of breath and exhausted. The young rooster had no idea what to do to save Patton from the coyote. Just then, Pachi the goat who had just woken up walked up to the clearly panicked rooster.
“What’s wrong Kukkud? You look like you’ve just seen a coyote!” joked Pachi.
“Help me Pachi! Its Patton! There’s a coyote!” Pachi, knowing immediately what had to be done took off towards the rancher’s house.
“Follow me little rooster! I know who we need!”
The two ran all the way to the front door of the rancher’s house, where the heelers would be resting. As Pachi suspected, there was Sonny and Percy, it was still too early for the dogs to be out of the house. She bounded up the stairs and head butted the door with all her might. Sonny and Percy, startled by the sudden commotion, jumped up to look out of the window.
“Pachi? What’s wrong?” said Sonny.
“Percy! Sonny! Help! Patton’s been taken by a coyote!”
Immediately, the two dogs sprang into action, howling until the rancher opened the door to let them out of the house.
“You take lead Percy! You’ve got this.” Said Sonny to his son, who had proved his value as a guard dog the past few weeks. Without a second to waste and knowing exactly where to look first, Percy took off to save Cloverfield Ranch’s beloved rooster. Percy’s experience paid off, because just as he had suspected, he saw the coyote creep along the fence of the ranch with Patton dangling between his teeth. Fearing the worst for Patton, the two dogs jumped into action, racing towards the coyote, barking as loud as they could. Startled, the coyote dropped Patton and took off into the distance knowing that the rooster was not worth a fight with the heelers. Percy quickly went to where the coyote had dropped the rooster, hoping that he was still alive and well. As he approached, Percy saw Patton’s body lay on the ground, motionless. Just when he thought that the beloved Rooster had not made it, Patton sprung up with all his might, well and alert.
“Patton! Are you okay?!” exclaimed Percy.
“Thanks to you kid.” Said Patton thankfully.
“Boy are we glad to see you safe, rooster.” Said Sonny.
The trio walked back to the rancher’s house, where they knew Pachi and Kukkud would be anxiously waiting.
When they approached the house, Kukkud jumped up filled with relief.
“Patton! I’m so glad that you’re alright!” said the little rooster.
“And it's because of you, Kukkud. I think it’s time for you to come with me on the patrols as well.” Said Patton, knowing how much the little rooster had wanted to. Kukkud ruffled his feathers and jumped for joy.
“Good job Percy. You did well.” Said Sonny, proud of his son. And just like that, the crew went about their day.
And that’s just another day at Cloverfield ranch!
